Cancer Care and Pets

Cancer in pets can be a scary event. Should your pet be suspected of having cancer we can offer comprehensive diagnostics including in-house blood testing, cytology (cell examination), biopsies and imaging such as radiographs and ultrasound. Referral for CT scan is also possible to be arranged where appropriate. If a diagnosis of cancer is made our veterinarians will walk you through treatment options available and where the likely costs involved.

Tumours can take many forms

While some are malignant, many tumours are harmless and pose little to no risk of spreading to other parts of the body. If you notice any new or changing lumps or bumps on your pet’s skin please book an appointment to have it assessed by our vet team. There have been tremendous breakthroughs in our understanding of veterinary cancer over the past decade, leading to increased longevity and better quality of life for many patients.

Cancer Treatments

Cancer is treated mostly with surgery and chemotherapy (radiation treatment is less accessible in New Zealand).

We are able to prove in-house surgical removal of most cancers. For very complicated surgeries we are able to work in with specialist surgeons at Massey University.

We also offer case reviews with a specialist veterinary oncologist in Australia who can design chemotherapy protocols for your pet if beneficial.

Cancer is something that everyone has different feelings on how to treat in pets. We treat every patient as an individual. Whilst the aim of cancer treatment in pets in to extend quality of life without making your pet sick, we recognise that not everyone wants to treat cancer in pets. If this is the case we offer end of life care advice to keep your pet comfortable and pain free.
